Our Story

We’re a small farm in Rusk, Texas — East Texas, about two hours east of Dallas, two hours north of Houston, and an hour and a half west of Shreveport. We’re a convenient drive for folks in Tyler, Jacksonville, and Nacogdoches, and central enough for customers across the region to make the drive worth it.

We raise cattle, sheep, hogs, chickens, and bees on 72 acres of pasture, and we sell direct to anyone who wants to know exactly what they’re eating.

That last part is the whole idea.

We believe you should be able to look up your food.

Every animal we raise gets an ear tag at birth. That number stays with them through their whole life — every pasture they graze, every weight check, every vet visit. When the animal is harvested and packaged, that same number goes on the label. You enter it on our traceability page, and you see the full record: where the animal was born, what it ate, who processed it.

This isn’t marketing language. It’s a database lookup.

We set it up this way because we think you deserve the receipts. If we say an animal was raised on pasture, grass-fed — you should be able to verify that. Not take our word for it.

How we raise our animals

Our sheep are St. Croix hair sheep — a naturally parasite-resistant breed that thrives on East Texas pasture without the chemical interventions most flocks require. They move through rotationally-grazed paddocks, eating native grasses, bermuda, clover, and winter rye. Grass from start to finish.

Our Red Wattle hogs are an American heritage breed, rare and worth finding. They’re raised on open pasture and supplemented with Non-GMO, soy-free supplemental feed. Red Wattle is known for exceptional marbling and a depth of flavor that commercial pork has largely lost.

Our chickens are pastured, slow-grown birds raised in batches on open ground and supplemented with Non-GMO, soy-free supplemental feed. Better flavor than anything raised in a confinement barn, and you can verify the batch they came from.

We also keep bees, tend a market garden, and are building out our beef operation with South Poll cattle — a heat-tolerant, grass-efficient breed bred for the South.

Who we are

Jarod and Jeff run the farm together out of Rusk, Texas. We started Base Camp Farm & Ranch because we wanted to build a food system we could stand behind — one where the farmer knows the customer and the customer knows the food.

We’re not a big operation. We raise what we can raise well, we sell direct, and we stand behind every package with a record you can actually check.

We’re centrally located for customers from Dallas, Houston, and Shreveport, and a short drive for folks in Tyler, Jacksonville, and Nacogdoches. If you’ve been looking for a farm to buy from directly, we’re probably closer than you think.
